Where the seaweeds lay
This Caribbean coastline is blanketed in sargassum or as we call it seaweed. Seaweeds play a vital role in the marine ecosystem. Sometimes, as a nuisance, sargassum provides vital habitat and food for young fish, turtles, and crabs. Our beach is a reminder that nature operates in cycles, each element contributing to the health of the whole. As I walk through this bed of seaweed, it’s a unique feeling. There is a damp and slippery feeling as the seaweeds cling to my toes with its long strands. But in all this ‘unpleasentness’ and the distinct smell that it gives, I take a moment to appreciate nature, knowing that this could have easily been heaps of trash that I walk through. This beautiful untamed photo reminds us that our beaches are living and changing, not just picturesque and we must do everything to preserve its life for us and future generations.
