Initial activities

No Column Title – 36 Field data collection has started! Prior to the start of this project in May 2023, hydrodynamic, bathymetric and ecological data were collected at the Manzanilla/Mayaro field site, as well as video imagery from a camera system that was set up at Mayaro Bay with the support of various funds including the Research Development and Impact Fund and UWI’s Campus Research and Publication Fund. A beach camera system was also established at Manzanilla beach through funding from the CaribCoast project. Manzanilla/Mayaro is located on the eastern coastline of Trinidad and has been experiencing increasingly destabilizing erosion due to the high energy environment of the Atlantic Ocean. Preliminary site visit – Tobago

No Column Title – 40 More recently, the team visited Tobago to conduct a preliminary site visit at two possible sites to establish a beach camera system on the island –the south-east coast at Magdalena Grand Beach Resort, and the south-western peninsula at Pigeon Point Heritage Park. The rationale for final site selection at the Tobago site is for a coastline that is undergoing beach erosion but also lined by coral reefs. The Tobago visit was conducted with the support of the Coastal Zone Management Unit of the Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and Urban Development and members of the Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development within the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).
