As the ripples in the Salybia River warp the reflections of the sky and trees, the fisherman boats lay waiting for their next fishing adventure. The Salybia Beach in the middleground guides across to the fishing houses that face the green hues and shades of North-East Trinidad.
Since the age of the indigenous peoples, fishing has maintained its purposes from food security to economic opportunities to fostering and establishing communities throughout the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago.
Thanks to the Salybia River which flows into the Salybia beach, its rich biodiversity sustains the fisherman village allowing it to continue fulfilling its roles.
On a grander scale, global efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals are greatly supported through the seemingly simplistic practise of fishing. It is important to reflect on how practises from long ago can now be the very key that protects our planet and promotes sustainable living.
